Sacred woodcuts

Come all to me....

I was inspired for this woodcut by a stone relief in a 12th century capital in the church of Saint Marie Madelaine in Vézelay.
The stone relief shows Jesus bringing the dead Judas home. He is carrying Judas on his shoulders, like Jesus carrying the lamb in the well-known image of the Good Shepherd.
In Psalm 23 we receive a great promise from God – and yet there can be situations in a person's life where it can be difficult to believe this promise.
The confidence that the image of Jesus with the dead Judas radiates, as well as the hope that Psalm 23 speaks of, were incentives for me to depict these two truths artistically.

Houses of the early fathers
"Watchman, how long the night?" A question that in a wide variety of situations man, a society, our church must ask.
The comforting thing is the promise "Morning is coming, but it is still night".
The desperate caller stands in the line of the sons of Israel. In the background on the right is the house of the arch-fathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Opposite them is the house of their wives, Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel and Leah.
Then comes the house of God's messenger Moses. Then the house of the prophets Elijah and Isaiah. At the end of the street (at the very front on the right) is the house of the family of David with Mary and Joseph, and then the one who received the call from Edom, Jesus.

The Fishing

This work uses an ancient formal language, the mandorla. In various cultures, the mandorla was the symbol of the meeting of the circle of earth and the circle of heaven, a symbol that shows that where heaven and earth meet, heaven on earth can be experienced. The centre of this woodcut is the biblical passage Joh. 21. 6, the catch of fish.

Workers in the vineyard

The workers in the vineyard and the promise that time is not God's measure is the basis of this woodcut.

The Emmaus

The Emmaus, two people leave behind the cruel place of Jesus' death and set out again. On this way they experience God, the first described further development of our faith, which is constantly changing. For the first time, the disciples experienced that even after Jesus' death, an encounter with God can be experienced, even if in a completely different form.
